Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been experiencing continued frequent urination despite treating UTI and yeast infection. I also have vaginal dryness, which only improves with vaginal moisturizer. This all began after using soap in that area. Could I have a dried-out urethra or a lingering infection? I'm scared and unsure what to do due to financial constraints.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Your symptoms of continued frequent urination despite previous treatment for UTI and yeast infection, along with vaginal dryness, are indeed concerning. While it is possible that you may have a lingering infection or a dried-out urethra, it is essential to consider other factors contributing to your symptoms.

Since you have stopped using soap in the vaginal area and are still experiencing vaginal dryness, the soap likely caused irritation, disrupting the natural balance of your vaginal flora. This could be a contributing factor to your symptoms.

Urethritis, inflammation of the urethra, can cause symptoms such as pain while urinating, pain during sexual intercourse, and itchiness at the tip of the urethra. Given your recent change in hygiene routine, urethritis is a possibility worth considering.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are another potential cause of your symptoms. UTIs can manifest with symptoms such as pain or burning while urinating, frequent or urgent need to urinate, and cloudy or foul-smelling urine. If you are experiencing these symptoms, a UTI could be the culprit.

Additionally, overactive bladder (OAB) is a condition characterized by a sudden, intense need to urinate, often accompanied by frequency, nocturia (waking up at night to urinate), and urinary urge incontinence (urine leakage). OAB may also explain your symptoms of frequent urination.

To prevent UTIs, maintain good hydration, urinate when you first feel the urge, and practice proper hygiene habits. If diagnosed with a UTI, antibiotics are usually prescribed. Completing the full course of medication is crucial to ensure the infection is eradicated.

If experiencing persistent or severe symptoms, seeking medical attention is highly recommended. A healthcare provider can conduct a physical examination, take a urine sample, and order additional tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They can also provide guidance on managing symptoms and preventing future infections.

In summary, while a lingering infection or a dried-out urethra are possibilities, it is important to consider other factors contributing to your symptoms. Seeking medical attention for evaluation and treatment is advisable, especially if symptoms persist or worsen.

Thanks
