Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

On December 21 and 22, I started experiencing flu symptoms, including a fever of 102.6°F and muscle aches. I went to the hospital early on the 22nd around 2 AM, and I was diagnosed with flu type A. However, by 5 PM that same day, my temperature dropped to 99.5°F, and most of my symptoms had disappeared. Today, December 23, I woke up feeling completely fine with no symptoms and a normal temperature of 98.5°F. I haven’t taken any medicine since the 22nd, and I’m wondering if I’m still contagious. I’m concerned about attending a Christmas gathering tomorrow. Could I still spread the flu to others?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It's understandable to have concerns about being contagious after your diagnosis of flu type A. The flu is typically most contagious in the first few days of symptoms, especially before the fever resolves. However, it is possible that your contagious period has already passed, given the improvement in your symptoms and normal temperature.

2. Flu is a self-limiting illness, meaning it often resolves on its own within a few days. Still, it's important to continue taking preventive measures to avoid spreading the virus. I recommend wearing a face mask and staying indoors as much as possible, especially around others, to minimize the risk of transmission.

3. Though your symptoms have improved, it’s always a good idea to check in with your physician to ensure complete recovery. Additionally, requesting a COVID-19 test may be useful to rule out any other potential infections.

Thanks
