Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently tested positive for influenza at UCLA Health after experiencing fever starting Tuesday, feeling better Wednesday, then having fever again Thursday. Today, I'm fever-free and feeling good. I have plans to go snowboarding on Sunday with a friend. Am I still contagious, or is it safe for me to go?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Influenza, caused by paramyxovirus, encompasses various strains affecting both humans and animals. Among types A, B, and C, type A is typically more virulent and often requires medication for full resolution, whereas types B and C are generally less severe and may resolve without medication.

Given your recent positive test for influenza and recent symptoms, it's prudent to stay off activities until you've been symptom-free for about one to two weeks. This precaution is especially important if you haven't started any medication yet and could be dealing with a contagious type A viral strain.

I recommend consulting your physician to confirm the specific strain you're dealing with and for further guidance.

Thanks
