Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been experiencing chills, a temperature of 101°F, body aches, a runny nose, and feelings of tiredness and weakness. What could be causing these symptoms?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Symptoms Interpretation:

Symptoms include chills, a temperature of 101°F, runny nose, tiredness, and weakness.

Clarification: A body temperature of 101°C is not survivable for human tissue; I presume you meant 101°F.

Possible Causes:

Malaria (plasmodiasis) is a consideration, especially if you reside in a malaria-endemic region.

If not in a malaria-endemic area, other diagnoses such as flu-like viral infections, atypical pneumonia, or dengue fever are possibilities.

Recommendations:

Testing for malaria parasites with microscopy or a rapid diagnostic test to confirm parasitemia.

Treatment with artemether/lumefantrine 80/480mg every 12 hours for three days if malaria is confirmed.

Paracetamol 1g every 8 hours for three days, amoxicillin 1g every 8 hours for five days, and loratadine 10mg every 8 hours for five days for runny nose.

Additional Tests:

Strongly advise getting tested for retroviruses and COVID-19 to rule out other possibilities.

Thanks
