Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently got bit on my lip by a dog, and I now have stitches. How can I tell if the wound is infected?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

If your lip is swollen, red, and painful, or if you feel throbbing or pressure around the bitten area, there’s a good chance the wound is infected. These are common signs of infection, especially if the area becomes warm to the touch or develops pus. Infections can occur when bacteria enter through the broken skin, so it's important to monitor the wound closely for these symptoms.

In more complicated cases, you may also develop a fever, which is a sign that the infection could be spreading. If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical attention as soon as possible. A doctor can assess the wound, clean it properly, and prescribe antibiotics if needed to prevent further complications.

Thanks
