Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What are the disadvantages of my masturbating for the last 8 years from age 13 to 21? Secondly, is there a way to eventually fully recover from it, and how long will it take to fully recover to the point where it feels like I never watched porn before? Thanks. I think I may suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) now because I tried to set up encounters with two beautiful women, but I wasn't sexually aroused enough to get an erection. However, whenever I watch porn, my ED goes away.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the response to your query below:

Masturbating from age 13 to 21 can lead to erectile dysfunction (ED), but recovery is possible. Lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and weight loss can significantly help in overcoming ED. It is essential to seek medical advice to develop a personalized recovery plan that works best for you.

Treatment options for ED include PDE-5 inhibitors, vacuum erection devices, injection therapy, and penile implants. The recovery time can vary, but many individuals experience improvements within around 8 weeks on average. Additionally, natural remedies like ginseng may assist in restoring erections; however, these are not FDA-approved, so it's crucial to consult a doctor before trying them.

Addressing any psychological factors contributing to your ED, seeking relationship counseling, and managing mental health issues are also vital aspects of recovery. Remember, ED is a treatable condition, and seeking professional help is key to regaining sexual function and overall well-being.

Thanks
