Patient Question
Hello Doctor,
What should I do as I have a tight foreskin when erect that doesn’t fully go back, but only when I pull hard, and it bubbles? Although when I'm soft it's fine to pull back but still bubbles.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
A tight foreskin, known as phimosis, is a common condition, especially during adolescence. Based on your description, it seems that the foreskin can be retracted when soft but becomes problematic during an erection, causing discomfort. The bubbling you experience could indicate the skin is stretched tightly, which may be a result of the foreskin's tightness. Pain or discomfort when retracting the foreskin, particularly when erect, could suggest a more severe case of phimosis, while ballooning during urination may indicate the opening is too tight. To address this, you can try gently stretching the foreskin by pulling it back as far as it comfortably goes, using a moisturizer or topical steroid cream like hydrocortisone to soften the skin. Maintaining good hygiene is essential, and you should avoid using perfumed soaps that could irritate the area. If stretching doesn’t resolve the issue within a month, or if you experience significant pain, swelling, or difficulty urinating, it’s important to consult a healthcare professional. Treatment options may include steroid creams or, in some cases, surgical procedures like circumcision or preputioplasty. If the foreskin cannot return to its normal position after being retracted (paraphimosis), seek immediate medical attention to prevent complications. Proper management of this condition is vital to avoid further issues and ensure your health and comfort.
