Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 29 years old and currently suffering from depression and factitious disorder. I was self-prescribing carbamazepine and diazepam in June and July, and I've had several suicidal thoughts. I even tried an overdose of carbamazepine (10 tabs) and had a Haldol IV injection. My mood is unstable, and I have no concentration. I've seen a psychiatrist who put me on quetiapine, cipralex, and bromazepam, but bromazepam was dropped, and now I'm on amitriptyline 75 mg. This all started after losing my father. Please help me—what can I do to get better?

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

I understand that what I am about to say might seem overwhelming, but it's crucial for you to try to stay calm. Your situation requires immediate psychiatric intervention. From what you've described, it appears you may not be experiencing unipolar depression but rather severe bipolar depression. You may be dealing with racing thoughts and difficulty sleeping, leading to a sense of losing control over your mind and emotions, which can feel extremely distressing.

It’s essential that you consult with a psychiatrist as soon as possible. When you meet with them, explain your symptoms and what I’ve shared here. You need a specific and accurate treatment plan, which is likely not what you're currently on. I believe that with the right treatment, you can feel better and regain control of your life.

Please don't delay in seeking help. Stay strong, and I sincerely hope you find a good doctor who can support you through this challenging time. You can get your life back on track!

Thanks
