Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I haven’t had a bowel movement in 5 days, and I’m starting to feel really uncomfortable and in pain. My stomach feels bloated and crampy. I’ve tried drinking more water and walking around, but nothing’s helped so far. I’m not sure if I should wait it out or see a doctor. What should I do?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s important to address constipation, especially if it’s been lasting for several days. One approach is to increase your intake of green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli, as they are rich in fiber, which can help promote bowel movements. Additionally, make sure to stay well-hydrated, as water also plays a key role in preventing constipation. You can try this for a day or two and see if it helps. If the discomfort persists or worsens, or if you experience severe pain, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying issues and discuss further treatment options, such as stool softeners or other interventions.

Thanks
