Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My 19-month-old has been constipated, possibly due to whole milk. We've been using Miralax for 6 months, but the constipation returns when we reduce the dosage. Is switching to soy or almond milk a good alternative? If so, which is better for my child? We’re looking for a solution.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on the symptoms you've described, it's possible that your child may be experiencing a milk hypersensitivity reaction, which could be contributing to the constipation. To properly diagnose this, I recommend a pelvi-abdominal ultrasound to check for any underlying issues in the abdominal region.

2. Additionally, it may be helpful to give your child some rest from milk for a period of time to see if the symptoms improve. If the issue persists, I would advise consulting with a pediatrician or a specialist to explore other possible causes and treatments. Please follow your doctor's guidance and keep them updated on any changes.

Thanks
