Hello Doctor,
About seven days ago, I had severe constipation and intense stomach pain, almost passing out on the toilet. After taking a stool softener, I had diarrhea but still couldn't go again until today. The pain returned, and after taking sodium docusate, I passed small chunks followed by diarrhea. Despite drinking 100 ounces of water daily, exercising, and eating a high-fiber diet, I’m still struggling. What could be causing this recurring constipation and pain, and how can I get relief?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It sounds like you're dealing with a long-standing issue of constipation. I recommend avoiding strong stimulant laxatives, as they can sometimes worsen the problem. Instead, you should try using milder options, such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) or lactulose-based medications. These are generally gentler and can help with regular bowel movements.
2. For now, you can try taking 25 ml of Movicol syrup at bedtime with a glass of water. This should help relieve the constipation over time. It's important to stay consistent with the treatment and continue your high-fiber diet and regular water intake. If symptoms persist or worsen, it's a good idea to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and possible adjustment of your treatment.
