Hello Doctor,
I’m a 21-year-old male and for the past 1.5 years, I have been experiencing post-void dribbling. At first, it was minor and I could control it by squeezing my pelvic floor muscles, but it has gradually worsened. I often feel like I’m not fully emptying my bladder, even when I try methods like elevating my pelvis or applying manual pressure. The last drops of urine seem to stay in my urethra and dribble out during activities such as running, jumping, sitting in certain positions, or cycling. Additionally, I sometimes have pain or bloating in my lower abdomen and discomfort on the sides under my ribs. Could you please help me understand what might be causing these symptoms?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.
1. Post-void dribbling happens when urine leaks after you finish urinating. In young men, this is often due to weakness in the pelvic floor muscles that support the urethra. Other causes could include anatomical issues like urethral narrowing or bladder problems that prevent complete emptying.
2. Your lower abdominal pain and bloating may relate to pelvic floor dysfunction or other nearby organs. I recommend starting pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) to strengthen those muscles and trying to gently press along the urethra after urination to clear leftover urine. Since your symptoms have lasted a while and are worsening, seeing a urologist would be a good next step. They can do tests to find the exact cause and suggest proper treatment.
3. Early care can improve your symptoms and comfort.
