Hello Doctor!
I recently had an IUD inserted about a month ago, and since then, I’ve been experiencing intense lower abdominal pain that feels similar to early labor contractions. I've also had fevers on and off during this time, which is making me quite anxious. My general practitioner referred me to the outpatient gynecology team, but they rejected the referral, leaving me frustrated and unsure of what to do next.
Is it normal to experience such severe pain and fever after an IUD insertion? What are the potential risks or complications I should be aware of?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
It's crucial to address your concerns, especially with significant pain and recurring fevers. Severe lower abdominal pain resembling early labor contractions and intermittent fevers after an IUD insertion are not typical and need further evaluation.
If your pain scores more than 5 or 6 out of 10 and over-the-counter pain medications aren't effective, complications like perforation of the uterus or expulsion of the IUD may be at play. Medical imaging, such as an abdominal X-ray or ultrasound, can help assess your condition. If complications are confirmed, surgical removal of the IUD may be necessary, which can be done through laparoscopy or open surgery.
Since your referral to the outpatient gynecology team was rejected, I recommend advocating for yourself by contacting them again or seeking a second opinion from another healthcare provider. Your health is a priority, and open communication with your healthcare team is essential. Make sure to detail all your symptoms, as this will help them provide the best care possible. Don't hesitate to seek further medical attention until you feel reassured about your health.
Thanks
