What Are Antacids?
Antacids are therapeutic agents that neutralize stomach acid, offering relief from conditions such as heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. Available over-the-counter without a prescription, these medications quickly reduce stomach acid levels, alleviating associated symptoms. It's crucial to recognize that, although effective in symptom relief, antacids do not target the underlying causes of heartburn and indigestion.
Why Use Antacids?
- Heartburn: Antacids are commonly used to relieve the burning sensation in the chest caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus (heartburn).
- Indigestion: Indigestion, characterized by discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen, can be eased by neutralizing excess stomach acid with antacids.
- Acid Reflux: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and acid reflux symptoms can be mitigated by using antacids to neutralize stomach acid.
- Upset Stomach: Antacids provide relief from stomach upset and discomfort caused by excessive stomach acid.
