Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

In 2011, I received a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC). Due to my obesity, I am considering undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Is it safe for me to have this surgery given my condition? Despite trying various diets, I have been unsuccessful in achieving significant weight loss. I would appreciate receiving factual information regarding the safety of gastric bypass surgery in my situation.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Gastric Bypass is generally safe for individuals with ulcerative colitis (UC). UC primarily affects your colon (large bowel) and does not interfere with the digestive tract in a way that would impact the surgery itself.

2. However, it's essential to discuss the medications you take for UC with your surgeon beforehand, as certain medications may affect healing or increase the risk of infection. Proper preparation and communication with your medical team are key to ensuring the procedure is as safe as possible.

Thanks
