Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 38 years old and had measles about three and a half months ago. I am still testing positive for the virus as of now. Since May, I have been dealing with allergies and stress-induced allergies. For the past two months, I’ve been experiencing severe edema and swelling in my hands and feet, which is causing me a lot of pain and headaches. I am currently taking Aerius and Proxen, but my condition seems to be worsening. I’m concerned because the swelling and edema are not improving. My IgM test is still positive for measles. Can you please advise what I should do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Post-viral arthralgias (joint pain) is common after measles, and the IgM test can remain positive for up to 6 months or longer. Since your fever, rash, and other measles symptoms have resolved, it’s likely you’re now dealing with post-viral effects. I recommend seeing a rheumatologist or your local physician for better management of your symptoms, including the swelling, pain, and headaches. Adjusting your medication may also help.

Thanks
