Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I've been having a sore throat and cough for the last two days. No other symptoms, so I'm pretty sure it's viral, but I've still been taking naproxen sodium three times a day and a cough syrup. Unfortunately, today I made a mistake and ended up taking an amoxicillin pill. Is it safe to leave it alone, or do I have to finish the dosage to avoid generating resistance to this antibiotic?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Viral pharyngitis is far more common than bacterial infections. The presence of a cough and runny nose usually suggests a viral cause. In your case, you likely don’t need antibiotics. You can discontinue the amoxicillin, and it would not significantly contribute to drug resistance. There’s no need to finish the dosage.

Thanks
