Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a pus-filled cyst on my labia that is red, itchy, and a bit painful. I'm worried and not sure if it's an infection or something more serious. Could I have an STD? Should I get tested?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

A pus-filled cyst on your labia could be a boil, follicular cyst, or infection. Boils result from bacteria, while cysts form from blocked hair follicles. Some STIs can cause similar symptoms, so check if your partner has any signs. A medical exam is needed to confirm the cause. Treatment may include antibiotics, and if the cyst is large or persistent, minor drainage might be required. STI screening, urine tests, and blood work can help rule out infections. If an STI is diagnosed, your partner should also be tested and treated. Seek medical attention for proper care.

Thanks
