Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been using Nexplanon for over a year now, and for the past few months, I’ve experienced irregular bleeding. I had some dark brown spotting leading up to my current semi-heavy period, but my last regular period was in May. I’m concerned about the bleeding now and wondering if there's something wrong. Should I be worried or is this normal?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s a good idea to get checked out to rule out any underlying issues. The irregular bleeding you're experiencing could be a side effect of Nexplanon, as hormonal contraceptives can sometimes cause changes in your cycle. However, it's also important to rule out the possibility of pregnancy, even if it's unlikely. A transvaginal ultrasound can help confirm if everything is as expected and eliminate pregnancy as a concern. I recommend making an appointment with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and next steps.

Thanks
