Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My girlfriend and I had sex, but the condom broke when I pulled out. She took Plan B right after. This happened about 6 days after her ovulation. We’re thinking about getting a copper IUD for emergency contraception because we want to stay anonymous since we still live with our parents. Could you please advise on what to do next?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

You’re doing the right thing by acting quickly. Plan B is less effective 6 days after ovulation because it mainly delays ovulation, which likely already happened. The copper IUD is the most effective emergency option and can work up to 5 days after sex by preventing implantation. Many clinics offer confidential care—call one soon to ask about costs and privacy. Watch for side effects from Plan B, and if her period is late by more than a week, take a pregnancy test.

Thanks
