Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My partner and I engaged in unprotected sex, during which he used the withdrawal method. Shortly afterward, I consumed Trust Pills. I'm concerned about the possibility of pregnancy. Can you please advise me on this matter?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

The likelihood of pregnancy depends on several factors:

1. Your exact position in your menstrual cycle is crucial in determining the likelihood of pregnancy. If you were near ovulation at the time of intercourse, the chances of conception are higher.

2. Ovulation occurring approximately 2 or 3 days after intercourse increases the likelihood of pregnancy.

3. It's important to understand that Trust Pills, like many oral contraceptives, require consistent use for at least 7 days before providing full protection against pregnancy. Taking the pill after intercourse may not prevent conception.

4. Coitus interruptus, or the withdrawal method, is not considered a reliable form of contraception. "Precum," the fluid that precedes ejaculation, may contain enough viable sperm to cause pregnancy.

5. In cases of unprotected sex, emergency contraception such as Levonorgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol (commonly known as Preven, Levonelle, or ellaOne) can be taken within 72 hours to reduce the risk of pregnancy. However, effectiveness decreases over time, and emergency contraception will not terminate an existing pregnancy.

6. It's important to be aware of potential side effects of emergency contraception, which may include headache, gastric upset, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, changes in appetite, and breast tenderness.

In conclusion, I recommend monitoring your symptoms closely and considering a consultation with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and guidance. If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thanks
