Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had sex last night, and afterward, I noticed some bleeding. It wasn’t a lot, but it was enough to make me worried. I’ve never experienced this before. Is this normal, or could it be a sign of something serious? I don’t have any pain, but I just want to understand what might be causing it. Could it be due to friction, or should I see a doctor?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Bleeding after sex can have several possible causes, ranging from minor irritation to more serious conditions. While it may sometimes be due to friction, dryness, or small tears, it is important to rule out underlying medical issues. The most concerning possibilities include early cervical or vaginal cancer, infections, or atrophic vaginitis (especially if you are nearing menopause).

2. A proper evaluation is necessary. This includes an internal pelvic exam, a speculum examination, and a Pap smear to check for any abnormalities. Depending on the findings, further tests or specialist advice may be needed. It’s best to see a doctor to determine the cause and get appropriate treatment if necessary.

Thanks
