Hello Doctor,
I tested positive for trichomoniasis in 2010, took the prescribed medication, and received a negative test afterward. In 2015, I got married. I was tested again after having my children in 2016 and 2022, and both tests were negative. Recently, I tested positive for trich again. I have only been with my husband since we got married. Is there any explanation for this result other than my husband being unfaithful?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, mainly spread through sexual contact. It is highly unlikely to contract it from toilet seats, pools, or other non-sexual sources, as the parasite does not survive well outside the body.
2. False positives can occur due to lab errors, and some individuals may carry the infection without symptoms for long periods. If unsure about your result, consider retesting. Consult a doctor to explore possible explanations and ensure both partners receive treatment to prevent reinfection.
Thanks
