Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My partner recently tested positive for an STD, and I’m worried I could be pregnant too. However, all my pregnancy tests have come back negative, and I got my period this month. Could the STD affect the results of my pregnancy tests, or is period bleeding the same as bleeding from an STD?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

First, it’s important to get treatment for the STD, both for your health and for your partner’s. Many STDs can be treated effectively with medication, so I recommend seeing a healthcare provider to start treatment. Regarding the pregnancy tests, if they came back negative and you got your period, it’s unlikely that you’re pregnant. Period bleeding and bleeding caused by an STD can feel different; STD-related bleeding might be irregular, lighter, or occur after sex. If you have concerns about any symptoms or the bleeding you’re experiencing, it’s a good idea to see a doctor for a full evaluation.

Thanks
