When to Worry About a Missed Period?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had unprotected sex about two months ago, around June 1st, when I was ovulating. I took two pregnancy tests around June 20th, both of which came back negative. I also got my period as usual on June 22nd and again on July 22nd. However, my period in July was shorter than usual, lasting only 3 days, though it was still pretty heavy. A friend recently told me that someone she knows didn’t realize she was pregnant until six months along, even though she was still getting regular periods. This made me a little anxious, so I wanted to ask if there’s any chance I could still be pregnant. Could there be other reasons for my cycle changes, or should I be concerned?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on the information you've provided, the chances of pregnancy seem quite low since you've had two normal periods after the unprotected sex, and your pregnancy tests were negative. However, I understand your anxiety, and to be 100% sure, I would recommend having an ultrasound to confirm that there is no pregnancy.

In addition, I strongly recommend using a reliable form of contraception to prevent any future concerns about unintended pregnancies. It's always best to be proactive in your reproductive health.

Thanks
