Is Soreness & Yellow Discharge After First-Time Sex Normal?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently had sex for the first time, and I'm experiencing some discomfort. There's a noticeable soreness in my vaginal area, and I’ve also observed a yellowish discharge. It doesn’t have a strong odor, but I’m still a bit worried. Is this normal after first-time intercourse, or could it be a sign of an infection or something else I should be concerned about? I’m not sure if this is part of the body adjusting or if I need to see a doctor.

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on the symptoms you've described—soreness and a yellowish discharge—this is not typically considered normal, especially after your first sexual experience. While some mild irritation or discomfort can occur during or after intercourse, persistent soreness and unusual discharge, especially if it's yellow, can indicate an infection. Infections such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are common causes of such symptoms, and they require attention. It’s important to address these symptoms promptly to avoid potential complications.

I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider as soon as possible. A doctor will perform an examination and may conduct some tests, such as a pelvic exam or swab, to determine the type of infection. Once the infection is identified, they will be able to prescribe the appropriate treatment, which could include antibiotics or other medications. In the meantime, try to avoid sexual activity until you’ve been seen by a healthcare professional. Don't hesitate to reach out if you have any more questions or need assistance with booking an appointment. Your health and well-being are very important.

Thanks
