How do I treat an itchy sore on my vagina?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have a persistent itchy sore on my vagina that has been bothering me for a year. It originally started as a small pimple, which I squeezed, and while it initially healed, it later became extremely itchy. I tend to scratch it a lot, and now it never fully heals—it's an open sore that remains very itchy. Are there any over-the-counter creams I can use to help it heal? Also, would it be safe to cut off the top itchy part with a clean razor blade and apply methylated spirit, alcohol, or Betadine to help it heal faster?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It is important that you do not attempt to treat this yourself, as cutting the sore or applying harsh substances like alcohol or methylated spirit can worsen the condition and increase the risk of infection.

2. Your symptoms could be due to a recurrent boil, a chronic skin condition, or even an underlying infection, including a sexually transmitted disease (STD). A proper medical evaluation is necessary to determine the exact cause.

3. I strongly recommend that you see a dermatologist or a healthcare provider for a thorough examination. They may perform tests, including STD screening and possibly a blood sugar test to check for diabetes, as uncontrolled diabetes can contribute to poor wound healing and recurrent skin infections.

4. In the meantime, avoid scratching or irritating the area further, and keep it clean and dry.

Thanks
