Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am 20 years old and I would like to know if the Unwanted 72 pill works effectively. I took the pill on December 16th, about 25-30 minutes after having intercourse. We were using protection, but unfortunately, the condom split, and we believe sperm may have entered the vagina. My last period started on November 29th. I wanted to check if the Unwanted 72 pill would still be effective in this situation, and what symptoms indicate that the pill is working.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. The Unwanted 72 pill is an emergency contraceptive, and it is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. Since you took the pill within 25-30 minutes after the condom broke, it should have worked to prevent pregnancy.

2. The most reliable indication that the pill has worked is the arrival of your next period. If your period comes on time, it typically means the pill was effective. However, if your period is late or you experience any unusual symptoms, it’s advisable to take a pregnancy test to be sure. If you have concerns or experience any side effects, please don't hesitate to reach out for further advice.

Thanks
