Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I underwent tubal ligation using the bipolar method about a year ago. Last week, I had unprotected sex for the first time. Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Tubal ligation is known to be a permanent and highly effective form of birth control; however, it does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Engaging in unprotected sex puts you at risk of contracting STIs. If you are in a stable relationship with your partner or both of you have been tested for STIs, or if you are not at risk of STIs, there is no need to worry as it is not necessary to use a condom. However, if you are at risk of contracting an infection, it is important to use a condom consistently during sexual activity and consult a sexual health clinic if you have any concerns. I hope this answers your query. Thanks and have a nice day.

Thanks
