Concerned About Missed Bleeding After Emergency Contraception?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My last period started on January 25th, and I had unprotected intercourse on January 29th and February 1st. Within 72 hours of the second incident, I took the emergency contraceptive pill, Unwanted 72. Today is February 5th, but I have not experienced any withdrawal bleeding yet. Could this be a cause for concern, or should I wait a bit longer?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s important to confirm whether you are pregnant, so I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy. If the result is negative but you still have concerns, it might be helpful to schedule an ultrasound or visit a healthcare provider for further evaluation. In some cases, withdrawal bleeding might be delayed or absent even after taking emergency contraception, so it's best to follow up with a professional to ensure everything is fine.

Thanks
