Can You Still Get Pregnant After Taking the iPill?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had unprotected sex with my girlfriend on the first day of her period, and she took an iPill within 24 hours. Is there still a chance she could get pregnant, or was the pill unnecessary? Also, will taking the iPill affect her current period—like the bleeding or cycle?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. The chances of pregnancy are extremely low when intercourse happens on the first day of the period, especially if an emergency contraceptive like the iPill was taken within 24 hours. The iPill mainly works by preventing ovulation, but ovulation typically does not occur during menstruation, so the pill was likely unnecessary in this case.

2. However, taking the iPill can cause temporary hormonal changes, which may lead to irregular bleeding, heavier or lighter periods, or changes in the next menstrual cycle. If she experiences prolonged or unusual symptoms, consulting a doctor for further guidance is recommended.

Thanks
