Can You Get Pregnant from Precum Without Ovulation?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m really worried about the possibility of pregnancy. My boyfriend and I were engaging in foreplay, and he was wearing a condom while rubbing against my vagina for about five minutes. He didn’t ejaculate, but afterward, he took off the condom and fingered me. I’m scared that some precum might have gotten on his hands while he was removing the condom. I wasn’t in my ovulation window, but my period is now nine days late. I’ve been under a lot of stress due to exams, so I’m wondering if that could be the reason for the delay. Could I still be pregnant from this situation?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It is unlikely for pregnancy to occur from precum alone, especially outside the ovulation window. However, since sperm can sometimes be present in precum and there was a possibility of indirect transfer, the risk is not entirely zero.

2. Stress can indeed cause menstrual delays, but to rule out pregnancy, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test now. If the test is negative and your period doesn’t arrive in the next week, consider repeating the test or getting a blood test for more accuracy. An ultrasound scan can also help clarify the situation if your period remains absent.

3. Once you have the results, you can decide on the next steps. If you're still concerned, consulting a doctor for further evaluation would be advisable.

Thanks
