Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Yesterday night, I had sex with my wife while she was on the 6th day of her period. I used a condom, but during penetration, she experienced some bleeding. What could be the reason for this? Should we be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Sex during menstruation can sometimes trigger additional bleeding due to hormonal fluctuations, cervical sensitivity, or minor vaginal trauma. Since your wife experienced bleeding during penetration, it is advisable to monitor the situation. If the bleeding persists beyond her normal period duration or is accompanied by pain or discomfort, she should undergo a pelvic examination. A Pap smear and ultrasound scan after the bleeding stops can help rule out underlying issues such as cervical polyps, infections, or other gynecological concerns. Consulting a doctor for an in-person evaluation would be the best approach.

Thanks
