Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Why am I cramping in the lower abdomen area after sex? I feel discomfort every time I move. This doesn’t normally happen, and it’s been going on for about 3 hours now.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Unfortunately, cramps after sex are not uncommon for many women. For most, the pain is so unpleasant that it interferes with their enjoyment after intimacy. Here are some potential causes:

  1. Irritation: During sex, the penis can hit the uterus, irritating the tissues and cervix, which may lead to discomfort afterward.

  2. Trapped Air: Air can get trapped in the vagina due to thrusting, sometimes causing pain if it doesn’t escape as “vaginal farts.”

  3. Sore Muscles: Engaging multiple muscle groups during sex can lead to soreness the next day, especially if the activity was vigorous.

  4. Cysts or Inflammation: Persistent pain might indicate a cyst or inflammation, often occurring in the ovaries. While most cysts resolve on their own, some may require removal.

  5. Endometriosis: This condition causes benign but painful growths in the pelvic area and can lead to discomfort during or after sex.

  6. Allergic Reactions: Rarely, reactions to condoms, sex toys, or even a partner's sperm can cause pain. Allergy tests may be necessary.

To prevent discomfort:

  • Take your time during sex.
  • Use lubricants to reduce irritation.
  • Experiment with different positions; the "Cowgirl" position allows better control.
  • Ensure to empty your bladder before sex to reduce pressure in the abdomen.

If the pain is unbearable or persists, it’s essential to consult a gynecologist. An ultrasound can help diagnose issues like cysts. Treatments vary for conditions like endometriosis and may include medication or surgery. Don’t hesitate to discuss your symptoms with your partner for support.

Thanks
