Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently had sex with my boyfriend, and after intercourse, I started bleeding. I wasn't bleeding during intercourse, but afterward, it was bright red. It's been less than 24 hours, and I'm still noticing blood after I pee, like I'm on my period. It's not happening every time, but it comes and goes. I'm not experiencing any pain or discomfort. Could this be normal, or should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s possible that urine and menstrual blood can mix, which may cause some confusion with bleeding. However, to rule out any underlying issues, I would recommend getting a few tests. A scan could help identify if there are any abnormalities. Additionally, a urine sample test and culture can check for any silent urinary tract infection or small stones that could be causing the bleeding. It would also be wise to have a Pap smear to screen for any potential issues like polyps or other conditions in the reproductive system. If the bleeding persists or you notice any other changes, please make sure to follow up with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

Thanks
