Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm worried because my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex on November 14th, and then on November 23rd, I got my period. Could it be possible that I'm not pregnant?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on the information you've provided, it's highly unlikely that you are pregnant. The fact that you experienced your period on November 23rd suggests that your body underwent its regular menstrual cycle. This menstrual bleeding indicates that the lining of your uterus shed, which typically occurs when fertilization of an egg by sperm does not happen. It's essential to consider the characteristics of your bleeding. If the bleeding you experienced was similar to your usual monthly discharge, then it further supports the likelihood that you are not pregnant. However, if the bleeding was light or weak, with a brighter color than your typical period, it might be advisable to undergo a pregnancy test for confirmation. Although rare, there are instances where some bleeding may occur even if fertilization has taken place. This could be due to the implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus, leading to what is commonly known as implantation bleeding. However, it's essential to note that implantation bleeding typically lasts for only a day or two and is not as heavy as a regular menstrual period. Considering all these factors, it is reassuring to say that the chances of pregnancy in your case are minimal. Nonetheless, if you still feel uncertain or anxious about your situation, I encourage you to consult with a healthcare professional for further evaluation and peace of mind.

Thanks
