Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’ve been experiencing some prostate-related symptoms and have read that a prostatectomy might be an option in certain cases. Could you help me understand what criteria are used to determine if someone is a good candidate for this surgery, and what the evaluation and scheduling process would look like if I were to consider it?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Let me explain a bit about prostatectomy and its typical indications. A prostatectomy—the surgical removal of the prostate—is most commonly performed for two main reasons:

Prostate Cancer: In cases where cancer is localized to the prostate and other treatment options aren’t suitable, surgery may be recommended.

Severe Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): When benign enlargement of the prostate leads to significant urinary symptoms that do not improve with medical management, surgery might be considered.

At your age, these conditions are relatively uncommon. If you’re not experiencing any bothersome urinary symptoms or have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer, there isn’t a strong reason to consider a prostatectomy right now. However, your concerns are important, and I’d like to ensure that we evaluate any symptoms you might have.

Thanks
