Hello Doctor,
For several months now, I have been blowing out HUGE, thick dark gray chunks of mucus out of my nose and sometimes even cough it up too. I am not sick, though. I was treated for a respiratory infection about 4 months ago with antibiotics, and then I took antibiotics again about a month ago, but that was for a dental procedure. I am 49 but have been in excellent physical shape my whole life. I am active, and I have never had any medical issues. No allergies, not on any medication either. I do not know what is causing this.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
The presence of grayish discharge from the nose can be a symptom of several underlying conditions. Some possible causes include chronic bacterial infections, sinusitis, atrophic rhinitis, or the presence of foreign bodies in the nasal passages. Other potential issues could involve injuries to the nose or sinuses that may not be immediately apparent. Given that you have recently taken antibiotics and have a history of a respiratory infection, it’s important to consider that you might be dealing with a lingering infection or an inflammatory condition.
It’s essential to seek medical attention if this type of discharge continues, as it could indicate an underlying problem that requires treatment. A thorough examination by a healthcare professional will help determine the cause and appropriate management for your symptoms. This may include imaging studies or further testing to rule out any serious conditions.
If you have any further questions or if your symptoms worsen, please do not hesitate to consult a doctor for a more comprehensive evaluation.
Thanks.
