Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently visited my doctor, who informed me that I am not pregnant. However, they advised that if my symptoms persist, I should get retested in a week or two. When I asked if I should wait until my next abnormal period to retest, the doctor said no, which confused me since it wasn't the response I expected. Can someone explain why a doctor might suggest retesting sooner rather than waiting for the next period? What circumstances would lead to that kind of advice?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

In situations like yours, it's important to closely monitor any ongoing symptoms. I recommend waiting about two weeks to take a repeat pregnancy test, as this can provide a clearer picture of your situation. Along with the test, a scan may also be necessary to confirm whether you are pregnant and to check for any other potential conditions, such as an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage.

Symptoms like unusual bleeding, abdominal pain, or persistent nausea can be indicators of underlying issues that need further evaluation. By retesting and possibly getting a scan, we can ensure that we accurately assess your health and address any concerns you may have.

Thanks
