Hello Doctor,
I usually have a very regular period that comes on time every month, but this month my period is a week late, which has never happened before. I had a tubal ligation done over 8 years ago, so I’m not sure what could be causing the delay. Could this be something to worry about? Should I be concerned about pregnancy, or could there be other reasons for this sudden change in my cycle?
Hello
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
It is understandable to be concerned about a missed period, especially when your cycles are usually regular. While tubal ligation is highly effective, there is a small chance of ligation failure, which could lead to pregnancy. To rule this out, I recommend taking a pregnancy test first. If positive, an early ultrasound scan would help confirm whether there is a pregnancy sac and assess the situation.
If the test is negative, a missed or delayed period could be due to other factors. If you're between the ages of 45-50, hormonal changes associated with perimenopause can sometimes lead to irregular cycles. Stress, lifestyle changes, or even minor health fluctuations can also cause delays in menstruation.
If your period continues to be irregular or if you have other symptoms, it would be a good idea to schedule a consultation for further evaluation and guidance.
Thanks
