Why Is My Period Lasting So Long? Should I Be Worried?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I usually have irregular periods, but my last cycle was 69 days long. Now, my period has been going on for 10 days, which is much longer than usual. It's not super heavy, but I am passing some small clots. I’m starting to worry—could this be a miscarriage? How would I know for sure?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Yes, it is possible. To determine if you're experiencing a miscarriage, I recommend taking a pregnancy test as a first step. If the test is positive or if you're still uncertain, you should get an ultrasound scan to assess the situation. The scan will help check for any remaining pregnancy tissue or confirm if the bleeding is due to another cause, such as hormonal imbalances or a prolonged cycle. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding (soaking through pads within an hour), or dizziness, seek medical attention immediately.

Thanks
