Why Am I Still Bleeding After a Miscarriage?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had a miscarriage three weeks ago, and I've been bleeding continuously since then. It's not heavy all the time, but it hasn't stopped completely. I'm starting to worry if this is normal or if something might be wrong. What can I do to stop the bleeding? Should I see a doctor, or will it stop on its own?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It sounds like you may have retained tissue in your uterus, which can cause prolonged bleeding after a miscarriage. In such cases, a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure may be necessary to remove any remaining tissue and stop the bleeding. However, before proceeding, I recommend seeing a doctor for an ultrasound and evaluation to confirm if this is the cause. If an infection or other complications are present, additional treatment may be needed. Please seek medical attention as soon as possible to ensure your recovery is safe and complete.

Thanks
