Hello Doctor,
I have some concerns related to miscarriage. I'm looking for guidance on recognizing the signs and symptoms of a potential miscarriage. Can you please explain how one can determine if they have experienced a miscarriage or not?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
It's important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of miscarriage, although they can vary from person to person.
Vaginal Bleeding: The most common sign of miscarriage is vaginal bleeding. This can range from light spotting to heavy bleeding with bright-red blood or clots. It's important to note that light vaginal bleeding can occur in the first trimester of pregnancy without necessarily indicating a miscarriage. If you experience any vaginal bleeding, it's crucial to contact your GP or maternity team for evaluation.
Cramping and Lower Abdominal Pain: Cramping and pain in the lower abdomen are also common symptoms of miscarriage. If you're experiencing severe or persistent pain, it's important to seek medical attention promptly.
Fluid or Tissue Discharge: Some individuals may notice a discharge of fluid or tissue from the vagina, which can be a sign of miscarriage.
Loss of Pregnancy Symptoms: Miscarriage can be associated with a sudden loss of pregnancy symptoms, such as nausea and breast tenderness.
Ectopic Pregnancy: In some cases, miscarriages occur due to an ectopic pregnancy, where the embryo implants outside the womb. Symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy can include severe tummy pain (usually on one side), vaginal bleeding or spotting, pain in the shoulder tip, diarrhea, vomiting, feeling faint or lightheaded, and possibly fainting. These symptoms typically arise between weeks 5 and 14 of the pregnancy.
Consult your Obgyn for diagnosis, including Quickstick pregnancy test, Beta hCG monitoring, and abdominal ultrasound. Contact them promptly to assess your health in potential miscarriage cases.
Thanks
