Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I recently noticed a few small yellow spots at both corners of my lower lip. They appear lighter than the normal color of my lips (red), and I haven't experienced any pain or itchiness. Can you please help me understand what might be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing Fordyce spots. These are small, painless, yellowish or white spots that can develop on the lips. They occur due to the presence of sebaceous glands, which are responsible for producing oil and are naturally present in the skin.

Fordyce spots are typically harmless and not contagious. They may become more noticeable under certain circumstances, such as when the lips are stretched or when light reflects off the surface of the skin. It's important to note that Fordyce spots are a common occurrence and do not usually require medical treatment.

However, if you notice any changes in the size, color, or texture of the spots, or if they begin to cause you pain or discomfort, I would recommend scheduling an appointment for a physical examination. While Fordyce spots are benign in most cases, it's essential to rule out any other potential underlying conditions that may require further evaluation or treatment.

In the meantime, you can take comfort in knowing that Fordyce spots are a normal variation of the skin and do not pose any significant health risks. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. Your well-being is my priority, and I'm here to support you on your journey to optimal health.

Thanks
