Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have been struggling with a persistent lip problem for over three years. My lips often feel dry, crack, peel, and sometimes even bleed, especially when the weather is very cold and dry. Over time, I have been diagnosed with several conditions such as fungal infection, allergic cheilitis, and exfoliative inflammatory cheilitis. I have tried various treatments, including antifungal creams like clotrimazole and miconazole, as well as topical steroid ointments and lotions. Despite all this, the problem continues to bother me. Could you please advise me on what might be causing this ongoing issue and suggest how I can effectively treat it? How can your service help me manage or resolve this condition?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out Dr. Galen, Please find the below response to your query.

1. Chronic lip dryness, cracking, and peeling can be challenging, especially with multiple diagnoses and treatments tried. Persistent symptoms despite antifungals and steroids suggest there may be an underlying issue like irritant contact, chronic inflammation, or even a nutritional deficiency.

2. I recommend a thorough evaluation, including allergy testing and possibly a biopsy if needed, to pinpoint the exact cause. Meanwhile, avoid harsh lip products and protect your lips from cold, dry weather using a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or barrier balm.

Thanks
