Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I went to brush my teeth for the night and noticed this bump on my inner lip. I took pictures of it, Google searched images, and even asked AI apps about what it could be. Most suggested inflammation or ingrown hair, but I'm scared it might be herpes or something like that.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query

As a dermatologist, I understand your concerns. However, it's important to remember that many common oral conditions can cause bumps in the mouth, including canker sores, mucoceles, or simple irritation or trauma from biting your lip or eating hot food. Herpes simplex virus, or oral herpes, typically presents as painful, fluid-filled blisters (often referred to as cold sores) that can burst and crust over.

However, without seeing the bump and knowing more about your symptoms (such as whether it's painful, if you've had it before, or if you're feeling unwell in any other way), it's difficult to provide a definitive answer. If you're concerned, the best course of action would be to consult with a healthcare provider or dentist. They can examine the bump and ask about your medical history to arrive at a more accurate diagnosis.

Please don't worry too much in the meantime - there are many possible causes of a bump on the inner lip, and most of them are not serious.

Thanks
