Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My whole body has been itching intensely for weeks. It's everywhere—arms, legs, back—and nothing I've tried, like moisturizers or antihistamines, helps. What could be causing this?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. It could be a scabies infestation, particularly if the itching becomes more severe at night. Scabies is caused by mites burrowing into the skin, leading to intense itching and sometimes a rash or small bumps. However, it’s important to note that other conditions, such as allergic reactions, eczema, or even systemic issues like liver or kidney problems, could also cause widespread itching.

2. A thorough examination by a doctor is crucial to determine the exact cause. The doctor may conduct a detailed skin check, ask about your medical history, and possibly perform tests like a skin scraping to identify scabies mites or other issues. Proper diagnosis ensures the right treatment plan, which could range from medications for scabies to allergy management or other therapies tailored to the underlying cause.

Thanks
