Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

What fasting and medication guidelines should I follow before the test?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

If you are referring to an Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD), fasting for at least 6 hours is generally recommended. Ideally, you should have nil by mouth from midnight if your procedure is scheduled in the morning hours. Taking tablets with a sip of water should be fine, especially if the medication is critical, such as tablets for diabetes. For critical medications, take them early in the morning, allowing approximately 2 hours for the medication to pass through your stomach. If you are on insulin, it is advisable to contact your diabetic nurse or the endoscopy unit for specific guidelines, as the recommendations may vary depending on the type of insulin you take. Following these guidelines will ensure a smooth procedure.

Thanks
