Hello Doctor,
In what ways can the amount of salt in my husbands diet influence his blood pressure and cholesterol levels?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
When the kidneys could not keep up with excess sodium in the blood, the body will retains water to dilute it. This increases blood volume which lead the heart excessive worker, harder and the putting pressure on blood vessels. This last can thicken blood vessels, leading to high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. It can also lead to many heart diseases and heart failure. Research by the American Heart Association indicates that reducing sodium intake lowers both systolic and diastolic pressure. The studies prove that reducing salt intake does not raise blood cholesterol levels. Instead, it provoque an increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the bad cholesterol, resulting in high cholesterol. Sodium reduction has no effect on good cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
