Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Can an umbilical hernia cause nausea? I have been experiencing stomach sickness for nearly 8 weeks. My doctors have conducted numerous tests, including a recent CT scan of my abdominal and pelvic area. The only notable finding was an umbilical hernia, but it was not considered significant. Is it possible that the umbilical hernia is responsible for my two-week-long nausea?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Umbilical hernia can contain various internal organs, including the greater omentum (a part of the lining of the stomach and intestines). If the hernia is prone to incarceration, it can cause nausea (due to the pulling of the abdominal organ lining or the obstruction of the intestines). If this is the case, surgical treatment for umbilical hernia should solve this issue. However, if nausea persists, a detailed gastroenterological workup is necessary.

Thanks
